What is hidden in a photo?

Location

Phones store GPS coordinates accurate to a few metres, often with altitude and the direction the camera faced.

Serial numbers

Cameras stamp their body and lens serial numbers. They link every photo you post, under any name, to one camera.

Names

Owner names typed into camera settings, device names like “Maya's phone”, people tagged in faces and keywords.

Hidden pictures

A preview copy inside the file, or whole images after its end, can still show what was cropped out.

Most social networks strip metadata on upload, but email, chat attachments, cloud links, marketplaces and forums often keep it. Map outlines and place names: Natural Earth (public domain).

Questions

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The files are read and rewritten inside your browser tab. There is no server step, and the map is drawn from outlines bundled with the page, so not even the coordinates are sent anywhere.

What does lossless cleaning mean?

For JPEG, PNG and WebP the app rebuilds the file around the original compressed picture data, which is copied byte for byte. The picture is not re-encoded, so there is no quality loss and the file usually gets smaller.

Why keep orientation and the colour profile?

Orientation tells viewers which way up to show the photo; without it, many phone photos appear sideways. The colour profile keeps colours correct. Neither identifies you, so both are kept by default and can be switched off.

Can it clean HEIC photos?

It reads HEIC and AVIF metadata in any browser. To clean them it re-encodes the picture to JPEG, WebP or PNG, which works in browsers that can display HEIC (Safari). Elsewhere, export the photo as JPEG first.
